A family farm that grew
into a global exporter.
Founded by Joseph Moshi in 1998 on a steep volcanic hillside outside Arusha, Kilimanjaro Avocado Farm has grown from 4 hectares and a pickup truck into Tanzania's most respected avocado export operation — without ever losing sight of why it started.
The right soil. The right elevation. The right idea.
Joseph Moshi spent three years studying agricultural science at Sokoine University before returning to his family's land. His father grew coffee. His grandfather grew maize. Joseph saw something different in the volcanic red soil and the consistent 18°C temperatures: ideal conditions for avocados that would taste unlike anything grown at sea level.
The first export shipment in 2003 — 12 pallets sent to a single importer in Rotterdam — was the beginning of a twenty-year relationship that still accounts for 15% of our annual volume today. That importer's feedback shaped how we approach grading, packing, and cold-chain management to this day.
By 2010, Joseph's daughter Amina joined the operation as logistics director, and his son David took over field management. The farm's second decade was defined by investment in infrastructure — a certified packhouse, solar energy, and the drip irrigation network that covers every hectare today.
Twenty-seven years of quiet progress.
First trees in the ground
Joseph Moshi plants 1,800 Hass seedlings on 4 hectares of converted coffee land outside Usa River, Arusha. The farm operates on savings and a single bank loan.
First export shipment
12 pallets shipped to FreshLink Netherlands. Feedback from the Dutch importer leads directly to changes in post-harvest handling and carton specifications.
GlobalG.A.P. certification
After two years of preparation, the farm achieves its first GlobalG.A.P. certification — opening doors to European supermarket supply chains.
Packhouse & solar array
Construction of a 4,800 m² certified packhouse with cold rooms, plus a 600 kW solar array that eliminates diesel dependency for on-farm operations.
Expansion to Asia
First containers shipped to Japan and South Korea. Asian buyers require adjustments to maturity index protocols — a challenge that ultimately sharpens our QC across all markets.
1,200 hectares & third generation
Joseph's granddaughter Clara joins as sustainability director. The farm achieves Rainforest Alliance certification and launches a community water initiative reaching 3 villages.

1,200 hectares at 1,400 metres altitude.
The farm sits at the base of the northern Arusha escarpment, where the altitude creates a natural temperature differential between day and night that concentrates sugars and oils in the fruit. The rich andosol soil — formed over millennia from Kilimanjaro's volcanic ash — delivers trace minerals that commercial lowland farms simply cannot replicate.
Rainfall averages 1,100mm per year, distributed across two growing seasons. Our drip irrigation system supplements natural rainfall with precision delivery of measured quantities — no more, no less than the root zone requires at each growth stage.
The farm is divided into four production zones, each managed with staggered harvest timing to ensure continuous export supply from January through November.
